How to Rip DVD & Import to Sony Vegas


As an ideal video editing tool, Sony Vegas is widely used by video professionals and hobbyists. For those who want to import DVD to Sony Vegas Pro for editing, it isn’t without hiccups because Sony Vegas does not support DVD importing. However, there are always solutions out there that allow us to import the video scenes from DVD to Sony Vegas for makeing home videos. Here are the possible ways for you.

For homemade DVD:

Vegas allows you to open up a DVD .IFO file. This imports the entire .VOB chain for both video and audio tracks.

Click File / Open, then navigate to your VIDEO_TS sub directory and enter *.IFO in the File name input field.

For a regular DVD you will see a VIDEO_TS.IFO, and a VTS_01_0.IFO. Select the VTS_01_0.IFO file and click on Open.

Note: Don’t try this on a DVD disk because Vegas will try to build an .sfk file containing audio peaks in the VIDEO_TS directory.

For commercial DVD:

Sometimes, you may want to extract some clips from your purchased DVD and put into Sony Vegas Pro to create a new project file for further use. On this occassion, Vegas won’t won’t allow you to import it because it’s a copyrighted video. Fortunately, there are many tools out there that allow you to rip DVDs into a fully compatible format with Sony Vegas. How to convert DVD to Sony Vegas Pro supported video files easy and fast

Step 1: Insert the DVD disc into your computer’s DVD drive, run the DVD converter and click Load DVD to import the DVD movies. DVD Folders, ISO files and IFO files are supported.


Step 2: Click “Format” bar to determine output format. Follow “Adobe Premiere/Sony Vegas” and select “MPEG-2(*.mpg)” as the output format. The output video seamlessly fit Sony Vegas Pro 13, 12, 11, 10, 9 and many more.


Step 3: Finally, hit the big Convert button on bottom of the main windows and the conversion from DVD to Sony Vegas Pro will begin immediately.

Tips & Tricks:

1. Adjust audio and video settings (optional)

The DVD to Sony Vegas converter enables users to adjust audio and video settings before transcoding DVD files to MPEG-2.
